On Saturday 21 April with the guys from the comic school of Temuco, we submitted to the monumental task of Scott McCloud's challenge of creating a story of 24 in one day. Of all the members of the school, only two of us could pull it off, that is, perform a complete history, drawings, text and inking. In this version of the challenge, do not include coloring or online publication.
Although I was not among those who managed to reach the goal (Gonzalo Muñoz and Luis Insunza, I say the names so you do not think I'm making it.
I must admit that the experience was rewarding in more ways than one. Addition to the interaction that arises between the 8 participants, I realized that aspects of creativity and not considered as relevant now become part of my job profile. both as to stretch the time, as in the way we work creatively.
To take the time I learned that:
The brush is far more useful than ink marker.
The rundown is useful. Know what's going on each page helps.
Working with small thumb is practical. Design the page so quickly.
When you're in a hurry, concentrate on the plan. Improvising helps creativity but takes time.
A more simple type of drawing is faster.
Works great shade extensions first and then work the details.
With regard to creativity, I understood:
The pin-ups, large vignettes and silhouettes in black and white are used more with less time.
A story may start one way, but end up quite differently.
Community work, being in a group is more productive than working alone.
Music helps some and distract others. Fortunately I'm the first kind.
Sometimes you can concentrate on your work so much that you forget to eat.
When not sleeping, you confuse the names of the people you're working or invent them, without realizing it.
My personal record on this occasion was to get 8 pages inked, but on the positive side complete an entire story with pictures and texts. 24 pages of simple drawings, but still very complex to allow me to move fast, think also of the history that came to mind at the time. I promise you will never reclaim an artist by rushing to get a magazine. It takes time.
